I call Steve Weeks, "The Doctor," because he is a doctor. Not a medical doctor, but a thinking mans doctor. Nobody reads more than the Doctor. He subscribes to every magazine and reads one book after another. Much of his reading is done while he is walking his four miles per day on the treadmill. That is why Toombs NOW is going to let the Doctor read for everybody in Toombs County. Check in regularly to read about what the Doctor is reading about.

The Doctor was reading three magazines today and the story that sparked his interest was in Forbes Magazine. The title "Dump the Couch" means instead of seeing a doctor or taking prescription drugs to control depression ,you instead, should think positive thoughts. Positive thoughts are certainly cheaper than a trip the shrink. So the Doctor suggest you always see the glass half full, even if there is nothing in the glass. |

Today the Doctor told me about a book that he bought at Harvey's titled A Ladder out of Depression. First, the Doctor is not depressed. He reads all kind of books- happy books and sad books. The Doctor says this is the best book he has ever read on the subject. It was written by Bonnie Keen. She is a singer, writer and a speaker and she was down in Blackshear on March 23rd holding a Heart to Heart Conference. The Doctor says she recommends exercise as one way to fight depression. The Doctor and I agree on this one- exercise does help. I know when I don't work out I get depressed that I didn't work out. more |

The Doctor was quite impressed with the women's basketball coach at Nebraska-Kearney. According to SI, Carol Russell coached a NCAA Division II tourney game just five hours after she gave birth. Her team, by the way, made it to the third round of the playoffs before losing. SI called the the whole thing the Sign of the Apocalypse. The Doctor said centuries ago women gave birth and went back to whatever they were doing immediately. |

Today the Doctor was reading Newsweek and he said the magazine wrote that Rudy Giuliani is too much of an urban cowboy to be president. I thought the Doctor was saying that Giuliani was too much like John Travolta, who was in the movie Urban Cowboy. But instead they meant that Giuliani is too much like "a bull in the china shop" to be president. The Doctor also told me that Newsweek said the hybrid car has helped Toyota pass General Motors. How many people drive Toyota hybrids? |

The Doctor is reading a new book called the Great Deluge. It is about Hurricane Katrina. Today I asked the Doctor what he has learned so far about that monster hurricane and he told me that Kuwait gave more money for relief than Oprah Winfrey. Oprah, who is worth more than the whole country of Kuwait, gave a million dollars while Kuwait gave a total of 500 million. The Doctor was also quite upset that the criminals in New Orleans were bragging about their crimes. According to the Book, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reacted to the hurricane way before the Federal Government sending medical relief and support personnel. The Great Deluge Web Site |

The Doctor read a book about Teddy Roosevelt prior to the hurricane book. The name of this one was- African Game Trails: The Classic Big Game Safari. According to the Doctor, Roosevelt declined to run for reelection as President in 1908. Instead he went on a big safari in Africa. The Doctor told me that Roosevelt had only one good eye. Roosevelt's was boxing a young captain of the artillery and he was cross-countered in the eye and that smashed the little blood-vessels. Book Web Sites |
